The
museum of the city of New York had a variety of different topics, which the
paintings, pictures, models and readings were about. One of the first things we
saw were pictures all done with similar techniques and I think the same person
did them all too. One technique was called stitching, where the artist captures
different pictures and stiches them all together to make a point/ main idea.
For example, the first picture was one of New York City. The person wanted us
to see one big part of New York City all in one picture. One side was taken in
the daytime while it was stitched into a picture going toward nighttime. These
pictures made me think about how one picture can say a lot and capture a lot
too.
The
second part of the museum focused on social activism. There were different
topics like women rights, segregation, voting, gay rights, biking lanes and
rebuilding. I decided to focus on gay rights, so I read that on June 27, 1969,
there was a protest because many people believed that it wasn’t good to be gay.
I also learned that there were hidden groups for gay people who met up in
secret during the day but the government knew where they were taken place so
they got caught. Last, this section talked about gay rights now and how people
act today. For example, one board after all of the parades and gay speaking’s,
there is still bullying and discrimination. This part of the museum made me
think about the past and helped me understand more about what social activism
is.
